Keeping Aircraft Airborne with Sales and Service

The aviation sector, both civilian and military segments, is projected to show significant demand for maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services that can extend the service life of an aircraft. This is driven by growing air travel and the increasing demands from the defense forces.

Achieving desired efficiencies when repairing or overhauling aircraft is difficult, however, as many manufacturers have closed up shop or discontinued the production of spares. This necessitates a reliable partner specializing in the maintenance and repair of aircraft avionics and the sale of spare parts.

  • Our commitment to excellence is reflected in our support with industry leaders and manufacturers such as Rockwell Collins, G.E., Honeywell, Teledyne, Lear Siegler, and numerous other reputable entities

Delivering just that is Air Shunt Instruments, a service provider with a strong 40-year legacy in providing military and commercial avionics MRO.

“Our commitment to excellence is reflected in our support with industry leaders and manufacturers such as Rockwell Collins, G.E., Honeywell, Teledyne, Lear Siegler, and numerous other reputable entities,” says Paul Nakkashian, CEO of Air Shunt Instruments.

The firm’s journey began in Burbank, California. It started as a small repair station specializing in instrumentation, working on components like airspeed gauges, altimeters, and oil pressure and temperature indicators. Over time, the company’s innovation led to expanding its service portfolio.

Today, Air Shunt proudly provides expertise in repairing traditional instruments and advanced equipment like transponders, beacons, and receiver transmitters for airplanes and helicopters. For efficient operations, the firm is categorized into several subdivisions—repairs dealing with domestic and international companies, the U.S. government USAF and US NAVY, and maintenance engagements for overseas militaries.

Air Shunt has also invested heavily in buying and stocking government surplus parts to support all aircraft repair work. Equipped with a vast inventory of over 50,000 line items, it is adept at repairing obsolete and end-of-life equipment and parts. This competency enables it to reliably support domestic and international customers on military and commercial aircraft.

Regardless of the scenario, aircraft have to be grounded if the maintenance engineers cannot replace certain parts and retrofit parts are unavailable. Considering this, Air Shunt plans to step into manufacturing to support customers in saving their fleets from ending up in boneyards. The key driver behind this mission is the opacity caused by stringent security norms, which hinder governments and manufacturers from revealing critical technical data to service providers. Air Shunt’s engineering department recompiles parts to curb this challenge, boosting aircraft maintenance while expanding its service offerings and market presence.

Exemplifying Air Shunt’s effectiveness is a notable engagement involving a customer looking to fix their autopilot computer. Since the original manufacturer discontinued production, the user complained about missing data on the autopilot and the inability to find a shop that could repair it. Flipping this script, Air Shunt reverse-engineered the system to fix and deploy it in the stipulated time. Ultimately, the on-time and effective overhaul assisted the customer in flying an aircraft that was grounded for a long time, making them happy.

The flawless services have earned it customers from around the world. Leading clients, including international companies, militaries, the Defense Contract Management Agency (DCMA), and the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) trust its services to consistently deliver expected outcomes on time. The firm also holds certifications from ISO 9001:2015, FAA, and EASA, making it a distinguished provider of aircraft repairs and spares.

While most companies in the industry either focus on the sales or repair aspect of the aircraft, Air Shunt strikes a balance between the two, which sets it apart in the market. It addresses problems like the growing scarcity of skilled aircraft technicians by bringing in dedicated in-house engineers for every project. They work alongside customer personnel to create a cohesive environment powered by high productivity and diversified skillsets. In fact, many of its employees have worked in the company for up to 35 years, with over 70 percent possessing at least a decade-long employment.

Air Shunt is poised to continue its mission by reverse engineering and manufacturing more spare parts to enhance aircraft maintenance. Driven by the zeal to deliver unparalleled maintenance and repair services to aircraft worldwide, it is the perfect wingman for the aviation industry.
