The adage “All of us are smarter than some of us” captures perfectly the thought behind mergers and acquisitions. When two companies combine their expertise and capability it enables united organization expansion into new market segments, new technologies, and multiplied skillsets. Wisconsin-based Pioneer Metal Finishing strategically acquired Utah-based Pilkington Metal Finishing with a similar intention: to further expand its presence into the aerospace and defense (A&D) market. Pilkington is a Nadcap accredited company specializing in chemical processing for the aerospace and defense sector whose prime customers include Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Northrop Grumman, Gulfstream Aerospace, and General Atomics. Pilkington’s offerings include sulfuric, boric-sulfuric, and chromic acid anodizing; conversion coating, wet paint/powder coating, non-destructive testing, and heat-treating services.

On the other hand, Pioneer is celebrating its 75th anniversary serving the North American manufacturing community and is the largest non-captive metal finisher in the U.S. David Jilot, Sales Director at Pioneer Metal Finishing, says, “We wanted best in class brand and capability in the A&D sector.

Pilkington is precisely that—a fantastic business with demonstrated process controls, partnership level OEM relationships, and most importantly a talent laden team that aligns with Pioneer’s values and culture.” Today, leveraging each of their complementary capabilities and footprint, the companies together are well positioned for the continued expansion of aerospace, defense, and deep space sectors.

Further spotlighting Pilkington’s focus on meeting customer expectations, John Pilkington, General Manager, says, “Our customers face two main challenges: lack of speed and quality control.

Clients today demand high-quality products that have been tested, certified, and delivered to them in the shortest time possible. ”The process control capabilities and scale of Pioneer and Pilkington combined are unparalleled. Dedicated in-house labs are approved by Nadcap. Trained Quality personnel are continuously testing both processes and product performance. Pilkington has created an aerospace centric shop, uniquely tailored to process critical components through up to 5 different processing departments. “This offers customers the vertical one-stop-shop appeal and assurance through rigorous testing that their components meet finish specification while remaining on schedule. We eliminate the uncertainty and hesitancy that the clients have with out-sourcing. We are an extension of our customer’s business units. Ultimately, we provide peace of mind to our customers,” states Jilot.

A supplier/customer case study often best illustrates this concept. Recently, Pilkington Metal Finishing was approached by a global aerospace prime to solve a complex, immediate, and expensive problem. “We worked hand-to-hand to analyze the different options within the spec. We tested multiple pretreatment variables before arriving at a robust solution which included anodize and powder topcoat,” John adds.“It was a partnership endeavor involving experts from Quality, Customer Service, and Production at both the customer and Pilkington”. Today, Pilkington remains a ‘trusted advisor’ to the client as they team together in new product development and performance.

Looking to the future, Pioneer is excited to fuse the Pilkington brand to its family of North American facilities – 9 in all. Plans to leverage Pioneer's national presence along with Pilkington’s brand value, process control structure, and Nadcap expertise are underway in the A&D market segment. Prime contractors and respective supply chains across multiple regions can expect new product offerings, innovative logistics/systems, and expert communication.
