The current standard for barrel protection—legacy Hexavalent Chrome plating—was developed in the early 1920’s. While it served its purpose for decades, it has hit a hard "physics wall." Traditional chrome plating is a toxic, chemically intensive process that relies on complex global supply chains for hazardous raw materials. As environmental regulations (such as REACH in Europe and EPA standards in North America) tighten, the number of facilities capable of performing this work is shrinking. This creates a strategic bottleneck. If a conflict disrupts the chemical supply chain, the ability to manufacture and repair barrels is halted.
