Hanwha Defense has signed the largest deal to export its K9 self-propelled howitzers and other support vehicles to Egypt, South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration
FREMONT, CA: According to the Defense Acquisition Program Administration of South Korea, Hanwha Defense has signed the largest deal to export its K9 self-propelled howitzers and associated support vehicles to Egypt. The weapons agency did not reveal the terms of the USD1.7 billion transactions, but a source familiar with the matter told Defense News that the Egyptian military would receive roughly 200 K9 artillery systems, as well as a slew of support vehicles, including the K10 ammunition resupply vehicles.
The contract is worth roughly USD 1.7 billion and covers hundreds of K9 Self-Propelled Howitzers (SPH), K10 Ammunition Resupply Vehicles, and K11 Fire Direction Control Vehicles, according to the business. The K11 Fire Direction Control Vehicle is a new vehicle that the Egyptian military is developing. The command-post vehicle will be built on the K9 chassis and will be equipped with a variety of high-tech sensors and communication equipment to meet the operational needs of the Egyptian Army and Navy. According to the source, the majority of the artillery and vehicles would be made locally at Factory 200, a state-run defence manufacturing plant outside Cairo, while the initial batch will be delivered soon.
According to the DAPA, the signing ceremony took place at Cairo's Artillery House. Egypt indicated an interest in modernising its artillery weapons in 2009, prompting the long-awaited agreement. However, efforts were put on hold for over a decade as the country saw a revolt, which was part of the Arab Spring, a wave of pro-democratic protests, uprisings, and civil wars that began in 2011. DAPA remarked that this is the first time the K9 Self-Propelled Howitzer has been sent to Africa, following successful exports to European and Asia-Pacific countries, and the largest K9 deal in terms of magnitude, with Egypt becoming the K9's eighth operator.
