Could you briefly introduce yourself?
I was born in India and moved to the United States at the age of 16. My passion for aviation led me to pursue a career in the industry, and I graduated from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida, with a degree in aviation business and airport management. With nearly 25 years of cumulative experience in aviation, the majority of my expertise lies in airport management, particularly operations. Additionally, I have engaged in aviation consulting for approximately three to four years and contributed to the development of aviation software technology in 2018 and 2019. My work has taken me to various regions, including the Middle East, West Africa, and Asia.
At present, I serve as the director of terminal operations, customer service, and the airport operations center at Miami Airport, where I oversee a team of over 200 employees. My responsibilities encompass the entire journey within the airport premises, from the moment passengers arrive at the terminal to the point just before boarding the aircraft. This includes matters related to security, customer service, interactions with the TSA, security checkpoints, building maintenance, elevators, escalators, displays, lost and found services, as well as the Airport Operations Center, which serves as the central hub for monitoring life safety, access control, fire alarms, and general inquiries.
My tenure in this role at Miami Airport spans more than three years, and I bring valuable prior experience from esteemed airports such as San Francisco Airport, Tampa International Airport, Orlando Airport, Sanford, and Daytona Beach. Furthermore, I have engaged in consulting work with numerous companies and airports, as well as government entities overseas, further enriching my expertise in airport operations.
What challenges that your customers in the industry are currently encountering?
Our customer base comprises both internal and external stakeholders. We consider the traveling public as our customers, along with all our partners, stakeholders, airlines, and entities that engage in business with the airport. This also includes the various divisions responsible for running and operating an airport entity. To address the challenges, let's start with the aftermath of the pandemic, which has resulted in significant staffing issues. A high turnover rate and a scarcity of employees have affected business continuity across the board. Within airlines, there's a shortage of pilots, crew agents, check-in agents, and ramp crew. Many concessionaires remain closed at various airports due to their inability to find sufficient staff to operate.
The airport operations are also grappling with the shortage of workers. Attracting and ramping up staffing has become a challenge as a considerable portion of the workforce is seeking hybrid or work-from-home scenarios during the pandemic.
Another major challenge that we face across all industries is supply chain disruption. Many manufacturing processes, both overseas and domestically, have experienced delays or scarcity of materials and spare parts, affecting the maintenance and repair of airport infrastructure. As airports operate 24/7, these issues can lead to significant disruptions in services.
Additionally, the cost of doing business has increased notably, with higher expenses for commodities, services, parts, labor, and supplies. The escalating costs further compound the challenges faced by our industry.
Furthermore, technology plays a crucial role in the aviation system in the United States.
