While yesterday’s victories are adorned with medals and accolades, the Air Force and defense sector understand that these successes are not the end. They are a meaningful pause and a reminder that the final question is always: how ready are our defense operators and pilots for tomorrow’s challenges? As former active-duty fighter pilots, Brian “Taz” Delamater, vice president of business development, and Aaron “Fang” Steffens, senior director of enterprise technology at Top Aces, know the weight this question carries. “We believe experience matters. Almost 75 percent of its F-16 pilots are U.S. Air Force Aggressor Squadron alumni, each with an average of nearly 2,500 hours in the 4th Generation fighter. As the first and only company to own and operate commercial F-16s, Top Aces has become a trusted strategic partner to its Air Force customers. Beyond playing the role of a simulated adversary, Top Aces serves as a multi-faceted contract aggressor force, with F-16s that are fully certified for air-to-air refueling. In a recent classified U.S. exercise involving over 60 aircraft, they executed 10 precise aerial refuelings during day and night missions— extending flight times to nearly three hours by day and over two and a half at night, almost tripling the on-station training value of each sortie. The night mission resulted in three kills of high-value Blue assets, while the day mission confirmed four kills, including three fifth-gen aircraft. These outcomes result from Top Aces’ purpose-built F-16 aggressors designed to challenge even the most advanced fifth-generation fighters like the F-22 and F-35. Equipped with cutting-edge capabilities such as AESA radar, infrared search and track (IRST), the Scorpion helmet-mounted cueing system, Link 16 tactical datalink and modern electronic attack (EA) pods, the company brings near-peer adversary realism to every engagement. At the core of Top Aces’ capabilities is its proprietary advanced aggressor mission system (AAMS). Launched after four years of R&D by in-house engineers and technicians, AAMS’ open architecture allows rapid integration of advanced sensors and functions, such as an AI-driven constructive wingman system.
When longtime private pilot David Rider opened his full-service, fixed-base operator (FBO) service at Hagerstown Regional Airport (KHGR) in 2003, he had more than 35 years of flying experience. Rental cars are parked ramp side in advance, hotel reservations are confirmed and handed over upon arrival, and customer service representatives offer local guidance with the same care one would expect from a luxury concierge. Rider Jet Center is a proud Avfuel FBO. The facility features high-end amenities like free WiFi, satellite TVs, comfortable lounges and a full-service restaurant called “The Grille at Runways.” The restaurant opened in 2014, and is a favorite for transient pilots, local patrons and military crews, offering breakfast, lunch and dinner six days a week with sweeping airfield views. According to Tom Brice, the President of Sky Bryce Aviation, “Rider Jet Center is absolutely terrific. I love this FBO. Great hangar space, and top-notch customer service! When my pilot friends come to visit, they tell me they love the staff, The Grille at Runways Restaurant, and the great line service.”
In the aircraft appraisals ecosystem, where it is vital to work with someone who has proven expertise, Jeff Soules’ integrity and comprehensive appraisals are exceptional. As the owner and president of Over the Top Aviation, DBA US Aircraft Appraisals, Soules provides certified appraisals for all types and sizes of airplanes and helicopters. With 30+ years in aviation and 25 years of appraisal experience, Soules is the go-to expert for insurers and law firms. Guiding Aircraft Owners through Appraisal Process The first step in Over the Top Aviation’s appraisal process is identifying the client and the purpose of the appraisal—whether it’s for banking, resale, insurance or litigation. Soules, who frequently works with banks, ensures the intended use is clearly documented in the final report. Once the objective is defined and initial details are gathered, it’s time for an on-site inspection. During the inspection, he captures detailed pictures of several parts, including the exterior, interior, avionics, tires, propeller and onboard equipment, to assess their condition. He thoroughly examines every detail and, in the case of corporate jets, reviews entertainment systems, galleys and restrooms. He also checks de-icing systems, including heated leading edges, noting any dents or damage to the surfaces. This is followed by a logbook and documentation review to track the aircraft’s damage history. He also analyzes FAA and National Transportation Safety Board records to identify any past incidents, accidents or modifications—particularly supplemental type certificates, which can affect the aircraft’s overall value. Once all the data is verified, Soules compares the aircraft to at least two similar models using trusted resources like JetNet, AMSTAT, Blue Book and VREF. He evaluates listings, sales history and engine time and specs to determine market value and prepares a detailed report with proper legal verbiage to ensure complete clarity.
