“The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.”—Mark Twain.

Eleftherios Plafountzis, aerospace engineer and the founder of Prometheus Space Technologies, discovered his true sense of purpose on July 23, 2018. As the devastating Mati wildfire ravaged Greece, claiming over 100 lives and destroying communities, Eleftherios found a renewed resolve in the face of overwhelming tragedy.

With decades of experience working on advanced aerospace platforms like the F-16 and C-130 and academic training at MIT and Harvard, Eleftherios had the technical expertise. But the wildfire gave his skills new meaning: to harness the power of space technology for the greater good of humanity. No longer was it enough to innovate within aerospace. Eleftherios recognized that technology had to serve a higher purpose that could help predict, prevent, and respond to disasters like the one that unfolded in Mati. This realization led to the creation of Prometheus Space Technologies, a company born from a mission to protect Earth through cutting-edge space-based systems.

Named after the mythological titan who brought fire to humanity, Prometheus Space Technologies is focused on leveraging space technology and AI to prevent the devastating fires that threaten the world.

“Using space-age innovation, AI-powered satellites, IoT sensors, and predictive analytics, we spot fires before they spark. No more reacting to a disaster; now we prevent it,” says Eleftherios, Founder and CEO.

At the heart of its arsenal is the Prometheus Fire Guardian Fusion Platform, a revolutionary system that blends multi-orbital satellite imagery (GEO, LEO, VLEO), IoT sensors, AI-driven analytics, and autonomous aerial systems into a 24/7 wildfire defence ecosystem.

Prometheus Space Technologies is committed to making world-class wildfire prevention accessible to everyone, including governments, small communities, homeowners, and businesses.

A Tech Symphony in Orbit

Prometheus’s edge lies in its scientific approach and vertically integrated platform, which leverages graph analytics, historical fire pattern data, and real-time environmental variables to predict wildfire threats with pinpoint accuracy.

The system’s 10-day wildfire prevention forecast, boasting 10-meter spatial resolution, is a game-changer in early warning capabilities, allowing stakeholders to act before disaster strikes.

Unlike traditional methods that rely on single-channel data or after-the-fact detection, Prometheus combines AI smoke cameras, drone reconnaissance, HAPS (High-Altitude Pseudo-Satellites), and IoT networks like Dryad’s sensor grid to create a layered, fault-tolerant detection mechanism.

The result? Minimal false alarms, maximum precision, and a transformative step forward in environmental risk management.

Innovation That Saves Lives

Prometheus is actively solving today’s challenges while shaping innovative solutions for a better tomorrow. The company’s Human Arson Activities Detection system is in development to address the root cause behind nearly 80 percent of wildfire ignitions. Meanwhile, autonomous response protocols and AR/VR training tools are poised to revolutionize firefighting readiness and crisis response.

“We’re not just innovating—we’re anticipating. We’re building systems that respond before you even know a threat,” says Plafountzis.

This future-focused mindset is backed by partnerships with NASA, NOAA, and EUMETSAT, as well as global satellite providers and wildfire research institutes. These collaborations have already translated into real-world successes from Greece to Australia.

In June 2022, the Prometheus system issued a Black Dot alert for Ithaca Island, identifying high-risk ignition zones days before a wildfire could erupt. Authorities took preemptive action, neutralizing the threat before it materialized. It was a powerful demonstration of Prometheus’s promise: prediction that leads to prevention.

Building on its success, Prometheus’s global monitoring initiative tracked over 20,000 wildfire hotspots worldwide using GEO satellites and AI fusion technology in 2023. In July 2024, Prometheus launched a full-scale pilot in Australia, and by Summer 2024, it had secured its first commercial contracts, launching its services into market readiness.

“Every wildfire we prevent is a community protected, a forest preserved, and a future secured. At Prometheus, we see data and technology not just as tools, but as shields for humanity. Our mission is to transform science into hope, and innovation into safety for every corner of the planet,” says Dr. Aggeliki Barberopoulou, CTO.

Democratizing Access to Space-Powered Safety

A standout feature of Prometheus’s approach is its inclusive pricing model. Where wildfire defence once demanded multimillion-dollar budgets, Prometheus offers affordable subscription-based access to the same powerful tools, opening the door for local municipalities, civil protection agencies, private enterprises, and even individual homeowners to join the fight.

“We’re breaking down barriers. Safety should never be a luxury. We’re giving the power of prevention to everyone—from remote island villages to sprawling city suburbs,” says Kevin London, Prometheus’s VP of Sales.

Headquartered in London and having an established presence in Europe and Australia, Prometheus is now expanding its focus to new global markets. Expansion plans include Southern Europe, Canada, Southeast Asia, South and Central Africa, and the U.S., regions where climate-induced wildfire threats are growing fast.

To further enhance service delivery, the company is preparing to lease a dedicated satellite mission, an ambitious leap that will allow tailored environmental surveillance for governments, insurance providers, and large-scale landholders at unprecedented precision.

Prometheus’s Rise as a Global Trailblazer

Prometheus’s remarkable contributions to space technology and environmental protection have garnered widespread recognition.

In 2021, the company received the Best European Scale-Up Award at the New Space Economy Expo Forum in Rome, a testament to its disruptive potential in the aerospace sector. The momentum didn’t stop there. In 2024, Prometheus was honoured at the Smart Cities Expo in Athens for its role in advancing sustainable urban resilience.

Continuing its streak of achievements, the company won the Green Tech Challenge in Greece, highlighting its commitment to environmentally conscious innovation. Most recently, in 2025, the UK Space Agency selected Prometheus as a Galactic Mentor Pick finalist, solidifying its reputation as a leader in climate-focused space technology.

These accolades are not just awards—they reflect Prometheus’s dedication to using cutting-edge space solutions to protect, predict, and preserve life on Earth.

The Final Word: Technology with a Soul

In a world increasingly dominated by algorithms and automation, Prometheus reminds us that technology’s true purpose is to serve humanity. Its founding story, rooted in tragedy, driven by purpose, and executed precisely, is a powerful testament to how vision, science, and empathy can align to protect what matters most.

As Eleftherios reflects:

“We are not just a tech company. We are a movement. One wildfire prevented, one life saved is our real return on investment.”
