In the aerospace landscape, where cutting-edge technology and environmental responsibility are inextricably linked, Safran, the renowned French multinational hightechnology conglomerate, stands tall as a crucial player. For decades, the company has been a leader in aerospace equipment manufacturing, catering to the diverse needs of both civil and military aviation sectors. This storied legacy is not merely one of longevity but of continuous innovation as Safran goes beyond technological advancement with groundbreaking solutions that steers the industry forward.

Commitment to Customer Satisfaction and Sustainability

Safran’s focus on customer satisfaction entails understanding the unique needs of its global clientele and delivering tailored solutions. This dedication extends beyond functionality. Safran also stands at the forefront of environmental responsibility, shaping a sustainable future for air travel. Developing ecofriendly solutions and promoting sustainable practices ensures that technological advancements empower the present and pave the way for a greener tomorrow.

“At Safran, safeguarding our planet is as crucial as ensuring safe flights. We are fully dedicated to transitioning to sustainable energy, driving change in every aspect of our operations,” states Olivier Andriès, Chief Executive Officer of Safran.

Safran’s dedication to sustainability is deeply ingrained in its corporate ethos. The company has set an ambitious goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. As a leader in the carbon-free aviation movement, it employs a multifaceted strategy that combines cutting-edge engine design with investment in alternative fuel sources. Developing engines optimised to run on 100 per cent sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), it also explores synthetic fuels and hydrogen for future implementation. It collaborates with industry leaders like Airbus on research projects concerning hydrogen infrastructure and engine development.

Recognising the high cost of these alternative fuels, Safran also acknowledges the necessity of improved engine efficiency to minimise fuel consumption. Strategically targeting technological advancements and large-scale fuel production leads to a charge towards a carbon-neutral aviation industry. This approach, however, requires significant investment, with estimates exceeding USD 1 trillion, to create a sustainable aviation fuel production system. Safran actively bridges this gap through partnerships and investments in startups like Ineratec, a developer of synthetic fuel production units.

“We lead the charge in reducing aircraft emissions, with our relentless research and innovation focusing on significantly slashing our environmental footprint, driving sustainability across the aerospace industry,” adds Andriès.

Beyond product development, Safran is also dedicated to minimising its environmental impact across its entire operation. The company has a comprehensive carbon reduction strategy that addresses emissions from its offices, production facilities, suppliers, and logistics operations. This strategy includes onsite renewable energy production, energy-efficient building design, and sustainable heating sources. Safran also commits to collaborating with its suppliers to reduce their environmental footprint. In 2022, the Group began mobilising its 400 most significant suppliers regarding emissions to commit to action plans in line with the Paris Climate Agreement by 2025.

Safran’s commitment to sustainability is further reinforced by its ambitious emissions reduction targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). These targets encompass the entire lifecycle of its products, including direct emissions from operations, emissions from energy use throughout the supply chain, and, most significantly, emissions generated by the use of its aeroplanes. By strategically reducing its footprint and collaborating with industry partners, Safran takes a leadership position in the fight against climate change within the aviation sector.

Innovation in Aircraft Engines: Powering Efficiency

One of Safran’s core areas of expertise lies in aircraft engines, which has established itself as a leading provider of reliable propulsion systems. Possessing a keen focus on developing ultra-efficient propulsion systems by 2035, Safran is committed to a three-pronged approach, reducing fuel consumption, lowering maintenance costs, and prioritising ecoresponsible design. Through its collaboration with General Electric in CFM International, Safran has played a significant role in the development of the LEAP® turbofan engine, a groundbreaking technology that powers next-generation singleaisle commercial jets like the Airbus A320neo, Boeing 737 MAX, and COMAC C919, setting a new standard for fuel efficiency.

The company’s influence extends to helicopter engines, serving multiple sectors, including civil, public agencies, and military applications. By manufacturing a range of turbine engines and partnering with global helicopter manufacturers like Airbus Helicopters, Bell Helicopters, and Avicopter, Safran has established itself as a trendsetter in rotorcraft technology innovation. Notably, its “electrified” rotorcraft incorporates multiple hybrid propulsion concepts designed to optimise power efficiency and performance in rotorcraft applications, setting new benchmarks in the industry.

Safran is also a leading supplier of aircraft engine nacelles, catering to all aviation segments, from regional and business jets to mainline commercial aircraft. Specialising in nacelle components such as air inlets, cowl doors, thrust reversers, exhaust systems, and Engine Build Units (EBU) ensures seamless integration with engines and aircraft. Leveraging its expertise in composite materials, the company manufactures high-performance nacelles that prioritise silent operation, lightweight design, and advanced aerodynamics. In addition, Safran’s meticulously designed hydraulic reversers and Electrical Thrust Reverser Actuation Systems enhance aerodynamics, reduce fuel consumption, and improve braking performance, setting new standards in nacelle technology and contributing to a more efficient and environmentally friendly aviation experience.

Extending its contributions to the aerospace industry beyond engines, Safran also provides mechanical power transmission systems, engine control units, and lubrication, cooling and filtration equipment. Its leadership in mechanical power transmission systems is evident in the continuous innovation in advanced materials and manufacturing processes, incorporating solid machining and additive manufacturing techniques. By utilising computer-aided mechanical design tools and 3D modelling, Safran ensures that its technical solutions align seamlessly with the evolving requirements of engine manufacturers, achieving efficiency and performance.
