Aviation Safety Management

Advocating Safe Air Travel

Back when Andrew Macqueen as an airlines safety investigator, was developing the first-ever pioneering electronic safety management system at Qantas Airways, a part of his role was to analyze complex data sets. And what he observed was that the available tools for data analysis at his disposal were highly inadequate and time-consuming. Moreover, they weren't built to solve aviation safety management issues, a need that other aviation safety professionals corroborated. He began to gradually incorporate those observations into a safety management software that he started developing.
He slowly began to bring those observations to life by developing a safety management software, which was still on the drawing board.

Time passed by, and Macqueen used his extensive aviation industry experience in aircraft maintenance and air traffic control to audit airline safety systems and provide consultation and advice to operators. But those observations and ideas buried deep inside Macqueen's mind continued to evolve with time. It was only several years later, after a few other successful stints in the aviation industry, that Macqueen had an epiphany. He realized that the industry was still heavily in dearth of a 'custom' software designed specifically to address aviation safety while staying compliant to various regulatory guidelines. Powered by this realization, Macqueen decided to start his own business venture with a team of practicing airline safety managers and devise a bespoke aviation safety management software.

Little did they know that this development would one day serve as the bedrock upon which the foundation of Aviation Safety Management (ASM) would be laid.
"Today, SERA acts as a holistic platform designed for managing aviation safety and quality to help customers maintain essential safety standards, all the while staying compliant with the latest regulatory requirements," says Macqueen, the founder and managing director of ASM.

The company's unique platform comes with a host of functionalities, including risk register, hazard identification, change management, bow tie analysis tool, and safe work procedures. These features help airlines effortlessly conduct root cause analysis, audits, and inspections, along with surveys and observations, to stay abreast of the safety standards followed by their organization. Yet another standalone and noteworthy feature of SERA is its big data analytics services.

Using SERA's live data-tracking and analysis feature, customers can analyze a particular industry trend and make more informed decisions regarding introducing new safety measures for the airline.

A Rigorous Approach to Deliverables
The most interesting fact about ASM is that the company's prowess not only lies in its leading-edge, easy-to-use safety management software but in its client onboarding approach as well. Whenever ASM engages with a client, the company requests for a copy of the client's safety and quality manual. After thoroughly going through it, ASM holds extensive consultations with their clients regarding the safety standards outlined by their regulator. Now, one of the biggest impediments faced by an airline is satisfying its regulators.

With many airline staff having a limited knowledge about compliance guidelines, it becomes a difficult job to convince the regulator of all the protective measures deployed by the airline. Amid this state-of-affairs, ASM, based on their discussions with the client, sometimes need towork with the regulator to provide information on all the 'whys' and 'hows' of achieving all the safety requirements with their safety management software. "When the regulator is comfortable with of all the protective measures in place, it enables an airline to more effortlessly uphold the desired benchmark for safety, without continually being in conflict with regulatory approvals," adds Macqueen.

The Distinct Touch of Righteousness

Finally, underpinning ASM's cost-effective safety management software and its outstanding business stance is its core philosophy of offering appropriate safety management tools for aviation safety professionals at an affordable price. Considering himself to be a safety professional first and then the director of a software company, Macqueen feels charging hefty sums for various modules leads the way for only industry giants to gain access to professional management system tools. "In view of these disparities, we have removed the hurdles in owning a fully featured, electronic safety management system that is meant to offer accessibility for all," remarks Macqueen.

Having established themselves as the forbearers of innovation in aviation risk management, it should hardly come as a surprise that ASM has been witnessing an exceptional growth trajectory. Bagging customers from every continent, ASM has successfully made some long-standing business relationships with numerous airlines, business jet charters, airports, air traffic service providers, maintenance organizations, and even agricultural aviation operators.

Among a surfeit of success stories, Macqueen recalls one instance when one of ASM's clients, a well-renowned airline, was struggling with a paper-based safety management system for 15000 users in a highly regulated environment. As soon as ASM stepped in, they introduced electronic reporting forms through which the entire airline staff could swiftly report their actual workplace safety concerns that gave company authorities a better view of the appropriate safety measures that needed to be included. Furthermore, the airline also successfully integrated its cabin crew management and aircraft maintenance systems with SERA to automate vast chunks of their reporting tasks. "We also developed a whole new set of integrations through which SERA can report directly to an airline's regulator through its electronic regulator forms," says Andrew, with a glint of pride.

Steered by this undying passion to redefine aviation safety management systems, ASM has its eyes set on the future with a horde of exciting offerings on the way. The company is currently working on a business intelligence module where customers will be able to identify certain business trends before they actually become incidents. And the company is helping customers do that by developing semantic lines in its software that will allow customers to conduct a deep-level study of the data and derive meaningful inferences to chalk out further strategic initiatives that would benefit the business.

Besides, ASM is continually developing and updating its platform by incorporating extremely insightful customer feedback for further enhancing customer experience. "We will include a whole new set of additional features in our platform within the next couple of years—backed by a purpose to promote safe air travel for all," concludes Macqueen.
