THANK YOU FOR SUBSCRIBING
For instance, government agencies are focused on increasing the satellite count to support critical missions. However, augmenting the ground infrastructure simultaneously to accommodate this expansion is easier said than done. Here, Freedom Space Technologies, a satellite technology provider, is adding immense value to the space race.
“The government’s satellite ground infrastructure is over 60 years old and they simply don’t have enough capacity to support the growing number of satellites being launched,” says T.I. Weintraub, President & CEO. “At Freedom Space, our mission is to provide additional capacity and resiliency to the U.S. government’s satellite ground infrastructure.”
Freedom Space and its parent company, ATLAS Space Operations have developed a technological readiness level (TRL) 9 satellite ground support system to support the expanding U.S space capabilities. The system, called Freedom®, has been successfully tested and proven in operational Space Force missions is ready to augment and reinforce the nation’s aging satellite ground infrastructure.
Mission-Ready Technology
Two key capabilities — the Freedom® ground software and a global federated network-of-networks — are central to the company’s operations.
The Freedom software works as a ground infrastructure virtualization solution through which users can connect to a global network and access critical space-based data from a single agnostic access point.
With more than 50 mission partners, 40 antenna partners and access to 1,200 antennas worldwide, the Freedom Space federated global ground network maximizes the capabilities of Freedom software. The solution’s one-touch, plug-and-play API functionality ensures seamless integration into the network, providing uninterrupted connectivity.
At the same time, it upholds the highest security standards, including double encryption and compliance with NIST 800- 171. Users can schedule existing antennas on-demand through the managed network-of-networks, simplifying connectivity and cutting command costs. The company has already delivered over 1.43 million minutes of satellite contact time to mission partners and current customers with 99 percent reliability.
Freedom Space also provides comprehensive left-of-launch and on-orbit support. Its ground station emulator assures satellite compatibility and real-time two-line element (TLE) data and establishes a reliable communication framework. The company’s engineers specialize in RF engineering and integration, step-by-step pre-launch testing and communication, all while providing mission risk reduction and increasing operational efficiencies.
From the critical launch and early orbit phase (LEOP) to comprehensive end-to-end compatibility testing, they work to minimize operational risks and maximize ground network utilization. Once in orbit, 24/7 on-call service from software, network and RF engineering teams guarantees continuous connectivity, making Freedom Space a trusted partner for secure and efficient satellite operations.
Security Above All
With global powers ramping up their cyber warfare capacities, security has become even more crucial in national security affairs. All Freedom Space personnel hold high-level security clearances, ensuring they can operate within classified environments while maintaining strict security protocols. It has also made significant investments in security infrastructure — including the upcoming NIST 800-53 certification — to provide secure access to space.
Freedom Space is led by a team of former space operations officers with deep military and intelligence experience, giving it a firsthand understanding of the mission’s critical importance. Weintraub, a former Army Space Operations and Intelligence officer with decades of expertise in aerospace & defense contracting, brings strategic insight and operational know-how to the company. He is joined by Vice Presidents Greg Glover, also an Army Space Operations officer and David Weissmiller, an Air Force Space & Cyber Operations officer. The team possesses a cumulative experience of over a hundred years in space operations, ensuring that all solutions are technically sound and mission-driven.
Expanding Horizons: Collaborating Across the Space Industry
The company’s impact is evident in real-world applications, such as its recent involvement in Sierra Space’s Resilient GPS program. Freedom Space assists the client in the design and development of the entire ground architecture for their upcoming satellite launch. This includes left-of-launch services like systems engineering, design, testing and integration.
Freedom Space has scripted many similar stories for major defense contractors like L3Harris and Millennium Space Systems.
The company actively collaborates with peers for mutual success. For instance, it has partnered with Omni Federal on multiple Space Force programs, bidding as strategic partners on opportunities from the Space Enterprise Consortium. This partnership led to the company’s first government contract and the necessary clearances to expand its classified work.
Value for All
Freedom Space’s value proposition extends to antenna providers as well. The company enhances antenna provider workflows by transforming idle antenna capacity into a valuable asset for both parties. Through an accelerated client onboarding tool, Freedom Forecaster and smart scheduling, antennas can be brought online faster, optimizing operational efficiency and improving utilization.
Both mission and antenna partners can enjoy seamless onboarding through the company’s Freedom Copilot, guiding them through each process, from mission requirements gathering and API integration to end-to-end testing. Freedom Space also provides access to billions of data points collected since 2015, giving partners unparalleled insights into mission performance and optimizing operations.
Towards a Secure Future
The company is now focused on commercial augmentation with the Space Force to leverage commercial satellite ground station capabilities for the U.S. government. This opportunity bats to Freedom Space’s specific strengths. “It’s essentially our mission statement”, says Weintraub.
Through a combination of technological innovation, space mission expertise and industry experience, Freedom Space has brought into existence a solution that has eluded government agencies for over three decades. By augmenting the nation’s security infrastructure with its capabilities, the company is joining the ranks of pioneering commercial players that have transformed national defense throughout the U.S.’s history. As competition in space intensifies, the expertise brought in by Freedom Space can prove decisive. After all, “America’s Defense runs on Freedom.”
