SATCOM networks in aviation, government and other mission-critical fields need to be secure, resilient and fully under customer control. Traditionally, however, achieving that autonomy meant contending with centralized hub-based architectures that created security risks, data sovereignty limitations and a single point of failure.

PolarSat built its business around a different model. Founded in 2003, the company has focused exclusively on private, full-mesh, hubless VSAT systems that enable organizations to own and operate their routed IP networks. Rather than functioning as tenants on a central gateway, customer sites communicate directly with one another. PolarSat designs and manufactures its VSAT antennas, modems and terminals at its facility in Montreal, Canada. The Power of Hubless Architecture

PolarSat 6th generation MF-TDMA modem, VSATPlus® 4 extends PolarSat’s hubless architecture by dynamically adapting to interference-prone RF environments. The modem supports rapid frequency hopping across 32 carriers and switches modulation and coding burst to burst both transmit and receive independently. This real-time spectrum agility and constant waveform adjustment allow the system to detect, avoid and mitigate interference while sustaining reliable communications under changing conditions.

In an African aviation authority network, nearby terrestrial infrastructure operating on closely spaced frequencies repeatedly interfered with satellite links. Using frequency hopping, the network automatically shifted to alternate frequencies whenever interference was detected, allowing air traffic control communications to continue uninterrupted.

At the network level, PolarSat’s VSAT terminals are deployed at each customer site and extends a customer’s internal network as a private full-mesh configuration. The network carries a broad range of IP traffic, including VoIP, video teleconferencing (VTC), email and file transfers and functions as a seamless extension of the customer’s existing computer network. Managed through standard routing configurations, the VSAT infrastructure can serve either as the primary connection or a reliable backup to terrestrial links.

PolarSat also helps organizations modernize legacy infrastructure. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, for instance, the company successfully upgraded a 25-year-old air traffic control network originally built on its VSATPlus II equipment. As the authority migrated from circuit-switched systems to IP-based communications, PolarSat supplied special converters to connect existing legacy radars and other circuit-based interfaces to the newer IP based network. This turnkey approach supported both old and new traffic simultaneously, enabling a smooth migration without operational disruption.

Innovation at the Edge

Classic ways to reduce interference and fix errors are reaching their limits as SATCOM environments become less predictable. PolarSat tackles this head-on by embedding machine learning directly into its modems at the network edge. Instead of depending on cloud-based processing, the company develops algorithms that enable modems to learn and instantly adjust to fluctuating link quality and interference.
